Run, people, run

November 10th, 2003  |  Published in Sports  |  11 Comments

I would love to be able to participate in this event.

But I am somewhat embarassed to admit that I can’t run.

I can walk. A few kilometres. More than a few on an exceptionally fit day.

But running is something I have never been able to figure out.

That’s why I can’t be a part of the Mumbai marathon.

But I will be there cheering from the sidelines, if any of you blogger folk decide to participate. The dream run (7 kms) should be possible for some of you young people (my old bones are creaking at the sound of that number!). Time for you to get out of your chairs and start posting some kilometres, instead of angst-filled entries. What about getting together and doing something physical for a change?

I don’t personally know anyone who can run the marathon. Except a certain Kiruba Shankar in Chennai, who I know can run a mean marathon.

So , Kiruba, are you packing your bags and coming for this one? We’ll be cheering for you if do. And you’ve got yourself two months to prepare. What say?

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN ?. Is this some kind of blog spamming thats pretty new. I know that kiruba had a couple of mails spammed to him with sub : kiruba, stop spam mails. that was funny.

this ain’t funny. serious junk comments. annoying.

Running??? I think I might pass on that…

Comment spamming??? Now that is the height of things!

I had no idea about this marathon, now I do! :) I might go for this actually, I think I can get into marathon shape by January! But we’ll just have to wait n see :)

Lazy Geek: It is some kind of spamming and it’s happening to those who are using MT. Shelley’s written about it here.

Monish: Yes, but let’s not wait to long, eh?!

I ran the Long Beach Intl Marathon [as part of Asha — a charity org] on Oct 12th. I had never run more than 5 miles before that. It took me 4 months of training to get into shape. See this website for more details on the training program. Btw, the prize money for the Mumbai marathon is very huge by International standards. Its probably one of the topmost ones.

Anyone who has run the marathon will attest George Shaheen’s famous words, “I have met my hero, and he is me.”

Incidentally, you can’t get away with the excuse that “my old bones are creaking at the sound of that number”. People in the 75–90 age group do first time marathons. I met a 75 year old Indian doctor who started running marathons after reaching the age of 60. He had run in 80 marathons! In my group, there were at least 4 forty-plus Indians who ran first time marathons. In fact one lady (with two kids) had an appendicitis operation four weeks before the marathon.

It is too late to train now, but you could try next year. :-)

Now we hope this is not considered a spam. We invite your attention towards the First IndiBlog Awards, aimed at recognizing the talents in IndiBlogosphere. We look forward to your patronage too.

Quizman: You’re right. That is a lame excuse. But I have another one! If you took 4 months to prepare for a 5 km run it will take me at least 8! And I don’t have that much time. But I’m willing to give it a go if I have some company. Anybody game?!
