Music, momos and mom!

December 23rd, 2003  |  Published in Personal  |  14 Comments

A lovely weekend.

Went for my first guitar lesson on Saturday morning.

Had friends over for dinner on Saturday night. Nearly everyone got lost trying to find our new place. Someone commented that they thought they were travelling to Pune! Cooked too much food. Belatedly, I realised I could have fed another 13 people. And our friends aren’t as young and hungry as they used to be either! Have enough food to last for the whole week now.

If you’re coming this side of town, please do drop in :) We’re bound to get tired of eating the same thing all of this week! On the menu: delicious momos (supplied by my cousin who takes orders), chicken wings and drumsticks with mushroom and baby corn (cooked Chinese style), moong salad, bangda fish fry, pomfret curry, chilli paneer, egg and potato delight (cooked by hubby after much persuasion :-/), dal and pulao. And then topped off with ice cream and custard.

Went out on Sunday to watch the really violent Tarantino flick, Kill Bill, Volume 1. QT never ceases to amaze. The one thing that is constant about him is his unpredictable style of filmmaking. And one gets a big dose of it in his latest endeavour. He must have a really gruesome imagination, I think. In fact, after a few minutes, the violence starts seeming run-of-the-mill — like something you encounter everyday — heads chopped off, limbs disembered, bodies decapacitated and fountains of blood everywhere. Eeks. And at the end of the two hours, she’s only killed two out of the five on her list. My last word: Watching Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu are totally paisa vasool!

The other movie I really want to watch is Love, Actually. Unfortunately, no one else I know wants to see it :(

Still waiting for the phone guy to land up. Meanwhile, went to check out Reliance’s connection, which offers Internet access. It works out a little expensive at about Rs 24 an hour. And there have been such bad reports about their service that I’m thinking twice about going in for it. Has anyone tried connecting from a Reliance phone? I’m wondering if anyone has first hand experience…

Meanwhile, Mom arrives from Guwahati tomorrow to spend a month with us. So I’m going to be on good behaviour now :)

I do so miss momos, especially from that weird bamboo restaurant (U-turn ?) near the Chandmari fly-over. (Wonder if it still exists after all these years).

Apropos Tarantino and Kill Bill, I was a bit shocked initially, but the violence was so exaggerated that it became almost comical. Great music though, and Uma Thurman in the Bruce Lee-inspired yellow jumpsuit was totally hot.

Interesting aside on QT himself: apparently on his mother’s 50th (I think) birthday, he wrote her a detailed letter imagining she had been violently murdered, and how sad he felt on hearing the news; that was his birthday present ! Go figure.

Kill Bill kicks ass! I can’t wait til number 2 is released! I saw the final Lord of The Rings trilogy! It was long like a hindi movie, but was amazingly done and damn entertaining! Congrads on your awards!

Kill Bill is real cool. Sad that they decided to cut the movie into 2…

Pass some momos this side… It is been 3 months since I ate one and can’t wait to get my hands on them again… :)

Pallavi: Well, if you come to Mumbai, you might get a taste of them! Are you going to try and make it here?

Suruj: U-turn does still exist. And they still make pretty nice momos! (And QT’s mom survived her 50th birthday? if she did, i’ll know where his violent streak comes from!)

Crab: Yeah, maybe I’ll take my mom!

Devin: I’m looking forward to watching it. whenever it arrives here…

Arun: If you were in Mumbai, I would have passed on a few to you!

Suruj: Are you an Assamese? Btw, my hubby went to Trichy too and passed out in 1994. Both of us are from Cotton. My sis is currently in the UK in Devon…

    Yep, I’m Assamese.

I was in Trichy between 95–99, so I guess your hubby was a bit before my time. Just out of curiosity, what’s his name ? I might have heard of him from one of my seniors.

Is your sis studying in the UK, or does she work ? There are quite a few Assamese functions — Bihus and such — in London during the year. If your sis doesn’t already know about it, I’d be glad to introduce her to the people who organize these things.

Suruj: That’s nice to know. I’ve been trying to put her in touch with a few Assamese people. Can you leave your email ID here? Or send me yours at anitabora5 at rediffmail.com. Will send you the details…
