The Terraces, Kanatal: Enjoy Himalayan views from 8500 feet

Kanatal is a city in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Located 78 km from Dehradun, capital of the state, it is 38 km from Mussoorie and 12 km from Chamba. It is on the Chamba-Mussoorie highway and nearly 300 km from Delhi.

Friend, adventure and nature lover, Rukhsana Parveen Haque spent a weekend at the invitation of The Terraces, Kanatal discovering the beauty of this gorgeous resort, enjoying the crisp mountain air, trekking, bird-watching and had an action-packed weekend. If you’re looking to enjoy some of the best Himalayan views, relax and even get a dose of adventure, this is a place you can keep in mind. Here’s her report transporting you to 8500 feet!

It turned out to be a long journey. First from Delhi to Dehradun by train overnight and then onward to Kanatal by road: a 3-hour drive. But it was all worth it. When we arrived at The Terraces, the rhododendron juice pepped us up and then making our way through flower laden pathways, we were shown our well-appointed and luxurious rooms. With the lush greenery all around and the clouds within touching distance, for a moment it felt like a dream. What a majestic and gorgeous getaway.

Exploring the beautiful pathways inside the resort

Our rooms were large and the electric blanket was a bonus in the cool climes. The balcony outside the room overlooked the Himalayan ranges and the rear doors opened to a wooden bridge held together by ropes. We had a rollicking time, rocking on the bridge!

The Terraces offers all the usual facilities, from a bar to a discotheque, sports facilities like TT tables, pool table, and various indoor games. What I loved was the resort’s spa and jacuzzi. With a view of the beautiful mountains, I couldn’t think of a better way to unwind and soak it all in.

A relaxing spa and jacuzzi: just what the doctor ordered

Lunch was a rural affair at a village home. Of course, we made sure we got a good dose of exercise before with a trek, starting from the resort. The elaborate lunch spread was even more enjoyable after the fresh air and the walk. While on our trek, we even got a glimpse of a bunch of barking deer. Of course, they ran as fast as they could at the sight of us.

Back at the resort, the group kept busy playing TT and then was treated to a round of paani puri, and an assortment of pakoras – just what we needed. And as the temperatures dropped, we had a bonfire to keep us warm.

The evening’s music was courtesy Coke Studio and once the DJ took over, everyone was busy shaking a leg or two. What a great way to rewind. And then there were more snacks. What’s life without a bit of indulgence right?

Starting the day with yoga–a round of pranayam and meditation–was quite an experience. And with the surrounding scenery and the crisp mountain air–it felt fabulous. After that, we experienced a guided birding tour and were in for a treat–from laughing thrushes, sparrows to the Himalayan bulbul–this is paradise for the bird lover.

Fresh air and some gorgeous views

After a sumptuous breakfast, we drove to Saur village, around 20 kms away and got a first-hand experience of village stay. Though we did not stay for the night, we explored the cottages and were served an amazing luncheon. We interacted with the locals, the women appeared more hard working taking care of their field jobs (gathering food for their animals, cultivation) as well as tending to their homes and children.

Back at the resort, we packed in more woollens and went off on a night safari in the dense Kaudia jungles. The road was rather rough and we even had to sign a ‘no indemnity’ claim form – just in case! We were quite sad that we didn’t spot any wildlife. Once we returned, we had a special picnic laid out for us. The bar, kitchen, the dining area and the whole pathway was lighted up with hand-made torches and a guitarist crooned out melodies from the yesteryears. We had dinner by the bonfire and driving back was a sight we won’t forget: just in front of our vehicle, a leopard cub stood, for a minute blinded by the headlights. We were equally stunned since this was totally unexpected. The cub quickly gathered his senses and ran back into the mountain shrubs, leaving behind an excited bunch in its wake.

Time again to wake up with yoga on day 3 and since the instructor went missing, I was at the helm of affairs and got a chance to demonstrate the surya namaskar and other breathing techniques. We went for another birding tour, and then it was time to pack our bags. Yes, all good things have to come to an end. But wait, we still had one last thing to do.

We drove down to the Satyun river picnic spot where we all had a great time in the water. We were treated to a wholesome lunch and then it was time to board the train back to Dehradun.
