Auroville Encore!

August 23rd, 2008  |  Published in India & Around, Nature & Wildlife, Sports & Adventure, Travel  |  18 Comments

My 3rd visit this year. And now I present, based on my multiple trips, things to do in Auroville.

– Cycle: Yes, I did it again. And I even managed not to fall off one!
– Ride: Lunas are really cool and they’re easy to maneuver too. I even progressed to a Kinetic and took pillion and here’s a pat on the back to the lady who volunteered to be my passenger!)
– Eat: (you’ll never tire of the fresh vegetables and salads : they are delicious. And the desserts too — yummy!)
– Eat brown bread and peanut butter: — I have just one thing to say — Don’t miss it!
– Shop: (candles, trinkets, clothes, handmade paper items, bags, hats, sandals… need I go on?)
– Swim: (take a dip into the sea at the nearest beach or the pool)
– Walk: (it’s so green and beautiful, you’ll never tire of the open spaces)
– Run: (I was too lazy to wake up early in the morning, but one lady did run miles and miles and enjoyed it thoroughly)
– Repeat all steps

Is it any wonder why I keep going back? :-)

Where did you stay at Auroville? Am planning a trip so would love some advice. Btw, I gave you a blog award but the comment doesn’t seem to have appeared here — maybe the system thought it was spam?

@ anindita: try this link: http://www.aurovilleguesthouses.org — and find one which accepts short term visitors (3–4 days). usually, they don’t allow people who visit for a day or two as the guest houses are meant for longer stays. an award? where? where? :-)

I went there once, in the early 2000. I didnt like the way the Auroville staff and residents treated visitors. Everything was so strict that you have to take permission even to sneeze (worst in the entry queue to Maitri Mandir). And yes, if you can justify the need of such a pompous building for meditation! — I found the building to be a misfit in the whole concept of Auroville).
I went to Pondi 4 times after that, but never visited Auroville. But yes, I visited the Aurobindo samadhi in all these trips– sometimes you get a feeling of this suffocating “discipline” there also but the beautiful garden itself is worth your time!

@ arvind: you should get something decent for around 500 bucks per day.

@ jammy: no, no! i swear this is for real!

@ sathish: haha! even i am not that ambitious! i am aiming to learn it by next year!

@ jay: yes, i don’t think auroville is for everyone. it’s not your usual touristy place. i haven’t been treated badly at any point of time. but i think either you like it or you don’t :-)

oh yeah thanks to onita (as she is lovingly called by Deks and I too call her that sometimes now)…the girl is a rockstar and has a never die attitude.…she biked, rode a scooty and a TVS all in one day…rockstar she is and yes, thanks to her we got to see Auroville through her eyes.…

@ shalini: hehe! i wish i was a rockstar :-) but yes, i am getting close to my dream of riding an enfield bullet!

    How’s it going?
